This is a little technically confusing, but worth the effort.

  1. Create a free account at Character.ai

  2. Click create new or visit this URL: https://character.ai/character/new

  3. Fill out your description of the character (vague is better) and choose a voice that matches the character from the list they present.

  4. The sound setup is the hardest part. You'll need an audio mixer that can route and exclude certain sounds. This is standard on shows where you include chat participants anyways, and you'll treat the character.ai character like a chat participant in terms of how you route your audio. I recommend using Voicemeeter for this.
    _
    a. Download or open a browser you never typically use and will dedicate to Character.ai. For example, Microsoft Edge.
    _
    b. In your volume settings, make it so the dialing software can hear you and the browser; and the browser you are using can only hear you and the dialer, but not itself.
    _
    c. Test out a conversation with the character by clicking the phone icon and talking to it. Then try calling a number and making sure that the dialer and character can hear each other. Almost done!

  5. Finally, disable any notification / UI noises from character.ai.
    _
    a. Right click anywhere on the character.ai page and choose Inspect from the right-click menu.
    _
    b. In the developer settings that open up, navigate to the Network tab.
    _
    c. In the list of filters choose Media
    _
    d. Talk to the character and you'll notice that every time there's a ding, mp3 files called "connected.mp3", "turn.mp3" and "turn_alt.mp3" will appear in the network list of media. Right click on those that appear and choose block url. It should now stop making noise when character.ai responds.
    _
    e. Now click the mute and unmute button in the character.ai interface. Block those mp3s as well ("mute.mp3" and "unmute.mp3").

You're all set! Make more characters and share them here and in Discord.

This is my favorite Milkbox show ever.

Using inspiration from @dialer, we used the following custom character.ai persona named Sgt Frank Katz Sr. to engage in conversations with random folks. He's just a WW2 vet looking for some dame companionship is all.

It's CRAZY how advanced AI is. Only one recipient realized it was AI I think.

The final call of the show is the funniest call ever on my show, and of course, I wasn't really a participant. Go figure!

Just a quick experiment connecting AI to real people and seeing what happens.

In this one I made a WW2 drill sergeant AI try to book a room and gave it no other prompts at all.

Kudos to @dialer for the inspiration for using AI for this kind of prank.
